Ode to the Black Turtleneck

Halloween of 1996 I was without a costume. Our family never invested in the pre-made characters seen at the party store, so we resorted to something we could whip up the afternoon of All Hallows Eve. The first layer usually started with black leggings and a black turtleneck. From there, the options were endless. I could be a cat, a burglar, a witch, a beatnik, a rock-n-roller, a Pink Lady, or a Disney princess. Little did I know how this exercise would predispose me to a partiality for black turtlenecks for the rest of my life.

Here, I wore it under a simple black dress, with opaque tights, black suede heels, and a cognac suede moto jacket (which is on sale!). The simplicity of its timeless silhouette gives my wardrobe versatility, whether I want to be dressed up or down. I revel in the free feeling of starting with a simple [black] foundation, and adding statement makers like this jacket and earring combo on top so I could channel a Spanish Queen and Audrey Hepburn all at once, because why not. Do you have a piece in your closet as dear to you as my black turtleneck? If you don't have one in your closet, I dare you to try one out and tell me what you think!
