Over the years, I have learned that I truly feel unabashed confidence wearing all black head to toe. Whether it’s a dress with heels, or a button down with jeans, my New Yorker heritage shines through this monochromatic look. All at once, I feel put together and ready for anything. That’s a powerful feeling (especially as a mama of 3)!

But how did I figure out my “confidence outfit”, a term my friend genius-ly coined? Trial and error.

I spent years in awe over Anthropologie and J. Crew catalogs; wistful over the consistent aesthetic each presented, and hoping to find myself in the pages. With my tiny budget, I scoured Goodwill, TJ Maxx, and H&M looking for dupes of my higher-priced dream outfits (or so I thought).

After a few successful recreations, I realized I was neither an Anthro girl or a J. Crew girl. My deep appreciation faded to admiration, and I found myself starting over. So I went way back to basics, and starting buying classic pieces that were neither too preppy or too minimalist. Just basics, really. And once I had a solid selection of jeans, trousers, tees, turtlenecks, sweaters, and blazers, it was easy to experiment with what I layered with. I started browsing Pinterest, blogs, and Instagram for outfit ideas that contained pieces I already owned, and bada bing, it worked. Suddenly, I felt like I really found my style. After that moment, shopping and getting dressed was so much easier. So now I know, when I don’t want to plan or stress over what to wear, I just grab my favorite black blouse, black jeans, and black flats.

This blouse is a vintage YSL stunner from my dear friend Janet Easter of Ever Thrift — you MUST check out her shop (and set your alarm because the drops sell out in minutes—yes minutes). It has dramatic sleeves with a simple collar and flat front, which makes it party on the arms and practical everywhere else; just don’t wear it to stir a meat sauce or bathe a baby. The jeans are a new (sale) purchase from one of my favorite designers Anine Bing. Her pieces are perfectly rock ‘n roll, with classic shapes you can wear with anything. I save up for her sales and try to buy 2-3 pieces a year to slowly build my wardrobe. These Schutz Anissa flats are a fun take on a ballet flat, with a trending square toe. And this little quilted bag has been with me for over a decade. I found it in a NYC Housing Works (pretty sure) and it’s Bloomingdales in-house brand from ages ago. Heart shapes have been my favorite since I was young, and these gorgeous “Best is Yet to Come” earrings from Brinker & Eliza, and hold so much meaning for me and the phase of life I’m in. Even better, they were given as a gift, which always makes me feel extra special. They remind me to have hope and work hard! Lastly, these killer shades from Dezi are a new staple for me because they are a little sporty and a little city-slicker. I linked the items I could find (affiliate) in case you’re looking for something similar! If you have your confidence outfit on, be sure to snap a photo and tag me on @worthyofwearing so I can repost it! I love seeing the joy you have when you wear something that makes you feel confident.
