Stephen and I have had the strangest issues with sofas. We've moved around quite a bit, and we've had some pretty frightening substitutes for a sofa over the years. Our first sofa was more like life-size doll furniture. The price was right, and the pieces fit up the 1920s staircase of the second floor flat we rented in an old home in Connecticut, but every seat of the sofa was its own piece. So, as you can imagine the way plastic moves effortlessly across hardwood floors, the feet of each piece glided willfully out of place with every slight movement.

In another apartment, our living space in a 1920s co-op building in Northwest DC, with little room for a bulky, sliding sectional. We lounged on these odd upholstered sleeping bed chairs, and I'm smirking as I try to describe them in words, that could be folded out into what most people would call a naptime bed for a preschooler, and could be compressed back together into something one step up from a bean bag chair. We watched so many glamorous episodes of Jeeves and Wooster on those chairs, and it was incredibly ironic.

In our last condo we broke down and purchased a modern futon, which felt more like a leather bench, but it served its purpose. I think we even watched half a movie on it before deciding it would be much better, despite the small screen and lack of surround sound, to watch the rest of the film on my iPad in our bed.

Enter Fall 2016 and we now own not one, but two actual sofas (one is a love seat, but still). With a toddler, we knew we wanted leather again because it is so easy to wipe up spills, and yogurt, and sweet potatoes, for that matter. Also, when you care for the leather regularly with a proper leather conditioner, the couch only gets more soft and broken-in over time. Since our sofa budget was pretty slim, I hunted for days on end for a bargain. We love to entertain, so I wanted to make sure we could have at least one full size sofa, and I was blessed with two. Funny how that happens.

I found the most perfect shade of coffee brown leather, at the right price from Target's Threshold line, and they had a discount going on with $100 off every $400 spent (bada-bing). The sofa and loveseat were shipped right to our apartment, and required minimal assembly. Within minutes of unpacking the boxes, we were lounging in a way that we seriously never have before. I truly forgot what it was like to melt into a sofa for a nap, or drink tea cuddled up next to someone without fear of sliding onto the floor. Even the other night, I found myself hunched over the kitchen sink browsing my instagram feed, when it dawned on me that I could sit on our sofa and rest a minute. Novel idea.

For any of you out there who are newly married, or temporarily broke, or both, you may understand this crazy story. Our new sofa makes me feel like an adult, and one day, I hope you have the privilege to have a place to lounge in your home that is not your bed.
